I would like to discuss the guns of James Bond. The primary focus will be on the guns that appear in the films. Images are hosted on Imageshack, some ads on imageshack MAY NOT BE WORKSAFE so consider yourself warned. Also, world.guns.ru is linked many times for further reference, that website has many irritating pop up ads.

Dr. No (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0055928/) 1962
When JFK mentioned that ‘From Russia with Love’ was one of his favourite books, Ian Fleming’s series of spy novels rose from famous to international phenomenon. Movie rights were secured for all his Bond stories with the exception of Casino Royale. Perhaps that is why the film makers chose to start the franchise with Dr. No
The first gun to appear in a Bond film is surprise, a 1911 (http://world.guns.ru/handguns/HG04-E.HTM) with a flimsy can on it. This gun makes another appearance later in the film.

Bond is issued a Walther PPK ( http://world.guns.ru/handguns/hg13-e.htm) by Major Boothroyd, who is inspired by a real person who wrote Ian Fleming to point out that only a lady would carry around a .25. Since this took place in the first film and an entire scene revolves it, the PPK becomes a kind of signature gun for Bond, which is stupid. In the films, all MI-6 and CIA agents carry a PPK, making them specific to no one. The PP and PPK were widely issued to European police agencies even before WW2. It was not that uncommon, which makes it a decent choice for an undercover agent if they HAVE to be armed. The Walther PP/K is lucky, in the sense that people identify it with James Bond and not the Gestapo since it was actually issued to them. Just a small example of the odd amounts of sentiment we can place on an inanimate object.

Despite being issued a PPK, through much of the film Bond is seen carrying the Walther PP, distinguished by its longer slide and barrel. I suspect this was a budget issue, or a simple mistake on the part of the film’s props handlers.

On the UE special features disc for Dr. No, there is a short piece called ‘The Guns of Bond’. As a gun freak, it’s very interesting to see this on so many levels. One is how gun liberal the UK must have been in the 60’s. Another is seeing the discussion of things like stopping power and proper holster selection. You’d be surprised how little things have changed.
Here’s the real Mr Boothroyd, showing his little range set up he has in his house. It is either for airguns only or the guy is totally insane.

Here’s an example of Sean Connery’s stellar trigger discipline and a better look at the Beretta (edit: reading the literary weapons article tells us that neither of Boothroyd's .25's are the Beretta 418 of Bond's choosing.)

From Russia with Love (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0057076/) (1963)
Fortunately for us Bond fans, Dr. No generated enough money and interest to warrant a sequel. This film starts a three film arc that I think is Connery’s peak. It also garnered more praise and attention than Dr. No and a huge ball starting rolling that would change cinema history forever.
The first chunk of the film shows more of SPECTER, the evil organization behind Dr No. (SPECTER stands for Special Executive Committee for Terrorism Extortion and Revenge). Plotting to steal a Soviet decoder machine and kill James Bond, SPECTER’s agents train to a high standard to battle with both the 00 Branch and SMERSH.
The cover art for FRWL shows Connery posing with a Walther LP 53 air pistol, which never appears in any film.

Back at Universal Export, Bond gets some more gear. Here we meet ‘Q’, which is really short for QM, which is short for Quarter Master. In the military, the Quarter Master is the guy you ask for duct tape and he tells you he’s all out and go get lost. In the books, its simply referred to as ‘the Q’, but the films erroneously label the man Q and it sticks and escalates to Q Branch, which is really more a spy R & D. Anyway, Bond is given a briefcase which contains lots of hidden gear.
Ammo in a tube (in Bond’s hands) and a pop out throwing knife:
http://content.imagesocket.com/thumbs/vlcsnap_7979654bf.png (http://imagesocket.com/view/vlcsnap_7979654bf.png)
Inside the case are hidden gold sovereigns and an AR-7 ( http://world.guns.ru/civil/civ007-e.htm) rifle. Q calls it a .25 cal folding sniper’s rifle. So he’s wrong three times in one sentence which is amazing. The rifle is .22lr not .25, take down and not folding and anybody who tries proper sniping with a .22lr needs a good slap. If he called it a take down covert rifle, or a survival rifle as it known by Henry Arms, its current manufacturer, I would be less enraged. Q points to the chamber of the barrel and tells Bond that’s the IR scope. I don’t even know what to tell you there.

http://content.imagesocket.com/thumbs/vlcsnap_799385ec3.png (http://imagesocket.com/view/vlcsnap_799385ec3.png)
To stop the would-be curious from stealing the gold and crappy rifle (believe me, I know how crappy they are) a tear gas cartridge disguised as a can of talcum powder will go off if the case isn’t opened properly.
http://content.imagesocket.com/thumbs/vlcsnap_7996780c8.png (http://imagesocket.com/view/vlcsnap_7996780c8.png)
This is Grant aiming some kind of pistol, I can’t tell from this screen cap, but I think it was a Mauser C96 ( http://world.guns.ru/handguns/hg90-e.htm) Someone tell me if I’m wrong.
http://content.imagesocket.com/thumbs/vlcsnap_81402357e.png (http://imagesocket.com/view/vlcsnap_81402357e.png)
The AR-7 in action. Bond attached a scope and suppressor that we didn’t see in the case he was issued. Since the scope is ‘infrared’ the sight picture has a red filter over it, which I guess is the film makers’ idea of night vision.
http://content.imagesocket.com/thumbs/vlcsnap_817851e8b.png (http://imagesocket.com/view/vlcsnap_817851e8b.png)
What is up with Hollywood suppressors? In this shot, you can see the suppressor extends INTO the barrel, which tells me it’s probably a Blank Firing Apparatus (BFA) disguised as a can.
http://content.imagesocket.com/thumbs/vlcsnap_615448cf.png (http://imagesocket.com/view/vlcsnap_615448cf.png)
.22lr should be banned because terrorists will shoot down helicopters with it.

http://content.imagesocket.com/thumbs/vlcsnap_88324406.png (http://imagesocket.com/view/vlcsnap_88324406.png)
Goldfinger (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0058150/) 1964
After From Russia with Love, audiences were pretty pumped for the next Bond adventure, and plans were laid to keep cranking them out at a steady pace. Goldfinger is considered by many to be the peak of the entire series and for many fans it’s their favourite, hands down. Despite its age, the movie is still quite watchable.
Goldfinger is the first movie to show Q’s lab, where Bond is issued a homing device. Q is usually mad at Bond who doesn’t listen to instructions and never returns his gear intact. This anger is ludicrous in comparison to the shenanigans occurring in the lab around him, usually under his auspices. A freak orgy of insane safety violations, people are testing deadly weaponry in a shared and open environment. Need to test a new ballistic vest? Just stand over there with your eyes closed. And do not notify anyone you’re about to dump a mag in full auto, hearing and eye protection is for pansies.
http://content.imagesocket.com/thumbs/vlcsnap_5661f05.png (http://imagesocket.com/view/vlcsnap_5661f05.png)
In the background, starting from the left going down Luger, mauser broom handle, 1911, walther P38, 1911. Then a row of revolvers, I leave this one to you guys since they all look the same to me. Rifles, lee enfield, unknown, mauser 98? M1 Garand, 870 and another rifle I can’t see. On the ground behind the human sand bag is what appears to be an old water cooled maxim, I think.
http://content.imagesocket.com/thumbs/vlcsnap_7609bf4.png (http://imagesocket.com/view/vlcsnap_7609bf4.png)
The AR7 rears its ugly head again, this time in the hands of Tilly Masterson, trying to avenge her murdered sister and failing horribly at it. Apparently she has .22 rounds made of compressed explodium.

ThunderBall (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0059800/) 1965
One my personal favourites, Thunderball is the end of what I consider to be Connery’s three film arc of perfection. Film historians note it as the most anticipated film of the decade, with the mania from FRWL and Goldfinger in full swing. It opens with Bond beating a tranny to death and escaping via jet pack. Then it goes into an awesome opening theme song by Tom Jones. If you can’t enjoy this you should be checked for a severe case of dead. This film is quite close to the book, with some of the fight scenes kicked up a notch for a more dramatic cinema event.
Here’s some baddies with the omnipresent PPK, this one with a silencer.

To stop the would-be curious from stealing the gold and crappy rifle (believe me, I know how crappy they are) a tear gas cartridge disguised as a can of talcum powder will go off if the case isn’t opened properly.

This is Grant aiming some kind of pistol, I can’t tell from this screen cap, but I think it was a Mauser C96 ( http://world.guns.ru/handguns/hg90-e.htm) Someone tell me if I’m wrong.

The AR-7 in action. Bond attached a scope and suppressor that we didn’t see in the case he was issued. Since the scope is ‘infrared’ the sight picture has a red filter over it, which I guess is the film makers’ idea of night vision.

What is up with Hollywood suppressors? In this shot, you can see the suppressor extends INTO the barrel, which tells me it’s probably a Blank Firing Apparatus (BFA) disguised as a can.

.22lr should be banned because terrorists will shoot down helicopters with it.

Flare guns should also be banned based on potential misuse, look at this carnage!

Bond Finally encounters Klebb, and we see some more unusual weapons. Klebb pulls a small gun on Bond, likely .25 cal, which I have trouble identifying.

Klebb’s back up is a pop out poisoned blade in her shoe, which she tries to bury into Bond’s crotch.

The AR7 rears its ugly head again, this time in the hands of Tilly Masterson, trying to avenge her murdered sister and failing horribly at it. Apparently she has .22 rounds made of compressed explodium.

How can I talk about Goldfinger without showing the crazy laser scene? In the novel it was just a band saw for cutting sheet metal.

Pussy Galore with a revolver I can’t identify. Pussy Galore was the first Combat Sex Goddess to appear in the films instead of the usual bimbos.

The titular villain using a gold plated revolver of some kind. (that would be more at home in Scaramanga’s hands but more on that later).

This was still when world leaders thought the Cold War would be won with giant jet bombers that were quite an impressive sight. This is a Vulcan nuclear bomber.

After stepping on some toes, Bond takes road rage fire from this revolver. Colt detective? Okay I tried naming a revolver, be nice to me please.
